[Science and Medicine]

The Older bachelor rule [Random words]

If you're old, I mean >25 years of age, and you're still a bachelor, I mean single, you would fits in this "older bachelor rule"; that is, once you find the right girl, you'll almost always marry her within 6 months. I've seen so many examples. Well, my wife and I married early, but I know what it is like. Older ppl are more mature, so that once they fall in love, it is serious.

    Congratulations on your marriage, JH!!

    Walker Evans [Photography]

    Walker Evans

The more I look at Walker Evans' works, the more I realized the beauty of them. No one would doubt Evans' skills as a photographer, his ability of capturing subject in an aesthetic way is clearly shown in his early abstract works,  the Brooklyn bridge series, his pictures for Africa sculpture, and the common tools series. But his real contribution to photographic art are his concept of "documentary style" and much more than that. Of course, looking at those works, I found they are more than archival documentaries. Evans grasped one of the unique feature of photography, that is it might be the only art form that can capture the subject in a neutral way. The photos bring to us the subjects and their environment without any emotional interference of the artist himself. Therefore the aesthetic that were fixed, is in its natural form. The content tell by itself. I can't stop myself from admiring his works now. Except very few of them, those works were not attractive to me at first. I think the reason why, is that most people misunderstand Art as they misunderstand Science. As Art does not automatic mean producing thing that looks nice, Science does not provide proof, rather explanation to the question we asked. By definition, Art is the products of human creativity that brings aesthetic of the subject. Here the meaning of aesthetic is not limited to beauty, but also healthy pleasure that you will experience.

    A dead fish

My unnamed fish died yesterday. According to the average life span of a platy (3-5 yrs), this Golden Tuxedo Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus sp.), lived in my fish tank for 4 years, was died of natural cause. She had been happy, healty and a little bit lonely.

[Random Words]

A worth watching list of the 2005 films [Films]

A worth watching list of the 2005 films

    Film I watched:
    (listed by preference)
Brokeback Mountain - The "gay cowboy" movie? It's much more than that.
Good Night, and Good Luck - It is not old-fashioned. Great visual experience,
even though it is black and white.
Turtles Can Fly - A film gets better and better towards the end. Touching!
So powerful that it kept me from sleeping the whole night.
March of the Penguins - Those birds are lovely.
Nobody Knows - Some Jps do make good films.
Capote - Worth watching for the acting. Almost a monologue.
Up and Down - It seemed to be weird, but it is much better than "Crash".
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - No Sci-Fi fan should miss this
movie. Better watch it in a theater.
Pride and Prejudice - Maybe not as good as it should be, but still worth
                                      watching.

    Film I have not watched:
    (Random list)
The Squid and the Whale - A film about family dysfunction. Any parent or
perspective parent should have a look at.
Transamerica - Another film about trans-gender.
A History of Violence - learn about the movie from reading an interview on
Viggo Mortensen. The plot sounds fun.
Cache - French direct Michael Haneke's new thriller. Can not miss it, especially
a film directed by a director said to be the present time Hitchcock.
Syriana - A political thriller with George Clooney and Matt Damon.
You know how much I like thrillers.
Walk the Line - In 2006, tons of like firms will be made.
After Ray, Walk the Line, who's next?
The 40-Year-Old Virgin - Everyone watched it said fun. I'll watch it on DVD.
Cinderella Man - Another reason to call the Academy the Academy of
motion picture ethnic and ethics. Poor Crowe.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Is Johnny Depp good looking?
Tim Burton's Corpse Bride - To tell the truth, I may not like it, but it doesn't
mean it is not worth watching.
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang - Ignore the tittle, read the synopsis.
    Munich - Spielberg.
Mrs. Henderson Presents - I am in it for Juji Dench.
    North Country - n/a.
Paradise Now - For security reasons, I will not put these two word here.
Anyway, it is a sensitive subject.
Inside Deep Throat - When it was played in the Athens Film festival. All the tickets were
sold out (for 3 sessions). They had to add another screening.

    What a Shame [films]

I think the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had better change its name to the Academy of Motion Picture ethnic and ethics. "Crash" winning this years Oscar? Give me a break!

Ann Lee won the Best Director award. It is so obvious that the directing in Crash is not masterful enough, so that they have to separate the Best Picture and Best Director awards this time if they want to give the Best Picture to Crash for the subject matter. But is Crash deserve this award for itself, comparing with all the other nominees? The answer is no. The film is not bad, it did well on organizing the complex subject, on details, on bringing up the conflicts and resolving them. But the plot was too dramatic, too predictable. Everything was based on a shallow idea of causes and consequences. This simplified version of the idea, was neither convincing, nor realistic. Who would believe that a white racist police officer sexually harassed an African-American woman in front of her husband, could then saved the same woman's life in a deadly exposure days later? A shop owner, who bought a gun the day before, had his shop damaged and denied insurance reimbursement, poured his revenge towards a locksmith, uncovered his name AND ADDRESS, tried to kill him at home, but accidentally shot the locksmith's daughter? And the bullet was a blank? They cannot happen, even in the movies. Maybe I am the shallow one that does not understand the metaphor. Still, I would not call a film a good one if I could tell the rest of the plot when I saw the first 1/3 of it. A predictable movie is boring. Period.

I was wondering, after finished watching Crash, why a film deals with racial and cultural stereotype is full of stereotype itself, as if the world stopped developing. There are a lot of little old tricks like the "brake" vs. "blake" etc., but all those tricks and old fashioned stories didn't touch the deep root of the problem. The misunderstanding and social intolerance of certain ethnic groups. Most people, while working on racial issues, did not realize let alone understand the history. No one truly regrets the wrong doings one or one's ancestors did. Without the understanding and regrets, one always think of oneself as the giver, the other parties the receivers. Positioning themselves like that, the racial issue will never be resolved.

Some Best Picture winners can never become a classic. Crash will be one of them. Shame on the Academy. There are much better films this year. What is the reason why they did not vote for Brokeback Mountain or Good Night, and Good Luck. I didn't know. Or I guess I should know according to the new name of the Academy.

The Places: Athens, OH [Short scratches for my HP]

If I had not lived in Athens for four years, I could never understand rural area. As urban creatures get used to the charm and convenience of the metropolitan so easily, rural creatures may not appreciate the tranqility and the wild beauty of the country side. Early this year, I came across a portfolio by Gregory Spaid. This little book, 'Grace', struck me with photos elegently captured the essece of the rural aera. Making me feel ashamed of not taking enough serious photos in the previous years. Well, then, it's about time for me the leave the place. How much time do I have left? I've heard others talking about how boring the place is. But I think it is better to understand the place and make the best out it. Maybe I am the kind of man who cherish every life experience. Yes, I learn from them; that's what become of me.
